Which area of Chicago is safer: hyde park or south loop? - sotuh park streaming

I look at the condominiums on the south side of Chicago, since I will be working with the UIC in the fall. I live with a roommate, and we all have our own car, but rely on public transportation in most of the time, especially during the work week. I love Hyde Park, because it is very diverse, but I also like SOTUH loop because it is closer to everything. Thank you!
